This is not my b

areaof expertise but I think it is very dependent on the industry and outcome desired.  For instance, if investment is the goal, regular email newsletters on company progress coupled with press releases for major milestones work well.

Being an entrepreneur can often be portrayed as being quite glamorous and glitzy. However, when it was just you on your own, trying to make sales, trying to contact new clients, etc – how did you motivate yourself during this time?

Set realistic, bite sized goals as well as larger, long term ones.

How's the response of students at Texas A& University? How interactive are the lecture sessions?
Mar 9, 6:15AM EST0

Generally get good, but I mainly speak to classes that already have an interest in entrepreneurship (like engineering design or business management).  I try to keep them as interactive as possible.

With regards to business development did you follow a business plan when you started and how difficult was it getting different businesses get established?
Mar 8, 11:43PM EST0

I sure didn't.  I did eventually write one for financing purposes, but it was mostly BS and seemed out of date by the time I finished writing it.  I do wish I had at least done some business planning though - i.e. using a lean canvas (which wasn't around when I started my first business).  I usually work through filling out a lean canvas with consulting clients.  I follow this with a capital needs worksheet.

What businesses are you currently involved with?
Mar 8, 2:41PM EST0

Right now I am mostly focused on university spinouts.  I am working with company that has a new lightweigh battery chemistry as well as an infrastructure planning software company.  I also still run my consulting company that engages with other startups as needed.

Did you follow a business plan when you started and how difficult was it getting the businesses established?

My first business was not hard to start, but it was an IT services business that I could bootstrap.  Capital intensive businesses like the ones I consult for now are more difficult and take careful planning.

What is the hardest thing you have had to do to get a business funded?
Mar 8, 8:48AM EST0

I am in the middle of that with one of my clients now.  It is based on a new battery technology.  We have proven it works at a lab scale, but in order to get investor or partner interest, they want to see it scaled up.  We'll need to complete this effort before we get any significant investment so are seeking further grant funds.
